Savannah Cat

Savannah cats are a very interesting and unique breed. They are a cross between a domestic cat and a serval. They offer challenges and rewards, and are in some ways very much like dogs. A Savannah cat is cared for in much the same way as a standard house cat. Due to their exotic nature, the breed is growing in popularity.

The Savannah cat is a cross between a serval and a domestic cat. The serval is a large-eared African cat, which weighs around 6000 pounds, about the size of an elephant (Just kidding). A serval actually weighs between 14 and 25 pounds. A Savannah cat weighs around 15 pounds, and should have spots or The International Cat Association (TICA) will not recognize it as a correct example of the breed. Because of its wild and domestic bloodlines, the Savannah cat resembles both wild and domestic cats.

As previously mentioned, the breed offers advantages and disadvantages. It is adaptable to new homes and is intelligent. In addition, it is good with children and other pets. If not properly socialized, however, Savannah cats may be aggressive. Some states do not allow Savannah cats. They are illegal in Alaska, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, and Iowa. In Massachusetts, a Savannah cat must be a fourth generation or lower, meaning at least four generations removed from the wild serval. In New York, Savannah cats must be at least fifth generation or lower and are disallowed in New York City. While Savannah Cats are unique and exotic, they may not be an option for some people.

The Savannah cat must be cared for like any other cat. They require a healthy diet such as high quality premium kibble. They should receive routine veterinary care and vaccinations. At home, care should be taken to ensure their safety such as removal of choking hazards and guarding against dangerous behavior such as chewing electrical wires. They are somewhat unusual and are therefore pricy, costing between $1,800 and $35,000, depending the breeder and generation.  Clearly, Savannah cats are unique. Their African lineage gives them an exotic appearance. If allowed by state law, owning a Savannah cat can offer unique challenges and rewards. Like any other cat, they need care and attention. With the right care and attention, they can make wonderful companions for the whole family.
